FALL BULLETIN 2000
THE CHANGING
FACE OF BOSTON LATIN SCHOOL
LETTER FROM THE HEADMASTER
Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,
As we mark the end of one century and the beginning of a new one, we celebrate the exciting changes that are taking place here at Boston Latin School. For the first time in more than 75 years, we find ourselves walking through a different main entranceway as we begin to see the fruits of more than 12 months of labor on the new wing of the school. The aforementioned entranceway is only the beginning, as students and faculty are also now enjoying lunch in the new dining hall, and are utilizing all that is now offered in the state-of-the art classrooms for the visual and performing arts.
Of course, progress comes with a price, and all of us at the school have balanced
juggling classrooms and offices with the demands of construction while maintaining
a full academic schedule. For
the upcoming year, students in Class VI remain at the Mission Grammar School.
Construction is now fully underway on the second floor of the building, as well
as in the former cafeteria space, soon to be an enviable 14,000-square-foot library
media center that will serve as the epicenter of the school. These additions and
improvements will not only transform the physical plant but also offer unprecedented
opportunities for teaching and learning, which is at the core of our mission for
the students who walk these halls.
There is much to look forward to in the year ahead. Thanks to the ongoing momentum of the capital campaign, we have already made significant strides in boosting programs at BLS, with the notable addition of a director of technology to oversee the integration and implementation of technology throughout the curriculum. This year we have hired a program director for guidance and support services, someone who will oversee the development of new models and consistent strategies in better serving students during their years at the Latin School, as well as in ever-more demanding college searches. Thanks to yet another campaign gift, BLS will be able to provide more funding for students who wish to assist the city’s fifth- and sixth-graders gain entrance to Boston Latin.
As always, I thank you for your continuing support of this historic institution, and I look forward to seeing many of you at upcoming alumni and school events.
Best regards,
