SAVE THE DATE - ALUMNI DINNER The Alumni Dinner is a wonderful occasion to reconnect with Alma Mater, visit with classmates and honor the contributions of fellow alumni to the Latin School community and beyond. Please join us this year on Tuesday, November 20, at The Boston Park Plaza for what will surely prove to be a very special night with our award recipients. Drum roll please...
We are pleased to announce that this year's Distinguished Graduate Award honoree is Daniel Yankelovich '42. This award has been Boston Latin School Association's highest honor, given each year to an individual exemplifying the motto "sumus primi." Yankelovich, founder of the NY Times/Yankelovich Poll, is a world-renowned social researcher, public opinion analyst and author.
The Outstanding Recent Graduate Award recognizes the achievement of the most recent generation, highlighting individuals whose actions have served as an inspiration and motivation to others. This year's honor goes to classmates John Fitzgerald '91 and Ailbe Glynn '91 whose efforts with the An Tain Golf Tournament have produced much needed support for Alma Mater and several memorial scholarships.
We are pleased to also recognize the following individuals who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to Alma Mater and her alumni. During the last school year alone, nearly 350 alumni served as volunteers in various capacities. The following recipients will receive their awards with fellow honorees at the Alumni Dinner: Duncan T. O’Brien, Jr. '78 (Joseph Desmond '44 Award), John Page '55 (Lee J. Dunn '24 Award) and Louis Izzi '87 (Edward C. Lambert Class Leadership Award).
Our congratulations and deep appreciation go out to all of these deserving award recipients. For more information about these awards, please visit the BLSA website at www.blsa.org.

The community offers a searchable directory of alumni (viewable only to BLS alumni), photo gallery, class notes section, events calendar/registration and more. It is a great way to stay connected, update your information, share news or look up old classmates. New sections will be phased in over the course of the next several months so be sure to visit often. Access to the online community is easy. Simply click here and enter your e-mail under "Request Sign In" on the right side of the page. Please be sure to use the e-mail that BLSA has on file for you. If you've been a registered member of the online community in the past, you must complete this first log in step as well. New job? Change of address? Take this chance to update your information for the online searchable directory. If you have any questions, please e-mail us at blsa@blsa.org and we'll be happy to assist you.

Two BLS students had a special opportunity to take part in a program that brought the Middle East a little bit closer to home this summer. The Boston Globe reported that the students spent time "learning Arabic and studying Middle Eastern history, geography, and culture as part of a national initiative to ramp up the number of Arabic speakers. The new, federally funded program, which is in only eight schools nationwide, is shattering many stereotypes of the Middle East." Jeffrey Yu '10, who speaks Chinese at home, said he is "taking Arabic to get an edge in his pursuit of an international business career." Cameron Arroyo '08 explained, "This program shows there's another side to the Middle East besides war and conflict." |
Fall Sports are gearing up for another season. Tap into the athletics schedules by clicking here to visit the BLS website. |
Javon Gates '12 took part in a four-week program at MIT this summer "learning physics through sport in an experiment that educators hope will hook boys on math and science" according to a recent Boston Globe article. Morning classroom lessons which incorporated graphing statistics or participating in hands-on experiences were reinforced in the afternoon on the baseball diamond. As a result Gates has a richer interest in and appreciation for science, "There's more than what you see, there's more than meets the eye." |

POINTS OF PRIDE CONTEST Congratulations to Michael Caljouw '84 for submitting the correct answer for the June question. Willis Boyd Allen, class of 1874, was the Boston Latin School graduate who was a prolific author of adventure books for young men. Among his books published by the D. Lothrup Company in Boston was this tale about the final year in high school of young Captain Burton of Company A, Boston Latin School Battalion. He dedicated the book to Head Master Moses Merrill.
September's question: Which head master, also a son of alma mater, is credited with establishing the Advanced Placement program giving many students the chance to receive credit for college courses on the freshman level?
Alumni seeking a free T-shirt should send responses — including your name and class year — magna cum celeritate via e-mail. Note: Alumni may win only once during an academic year.
