WELCOME BACK!
We hope that September finds you refreshed after summer vacations, family reunions and long days spent relaxing with carefree pursuits. New VP of Communications Kim Deely Emery '87 is pleased to be part of BLSA outreach efforts, masterfully overseen by Mary Tamer '85 for 14 years, and looks forward to alumni feedback during this changing of the guard. Our newsletter returns with several news items and updates we hope you will enjoy reading
and let us not forget the ever popular BLS trivia!

Harvard's Daniel Boyne, author of The Red Rose Crew will speak at the Boston Latin Crew Team annual fall fund raiser on Thursday, September 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cambridge Boathouse. The Red Rose Crew is the inspirational story of the underdog U.S. women's rowing team that medaled for the first time ever at the 1975 World Championships in Nottingham, England. Click here for more information.
THIRD TIME IS THE CHARM
After taking two mulligans, the Wolfpack Classic Committee had an ace on their hands on Monday, August 28, as 86 dedicated golfers traveled to Ferncroft Country Club in Danvers, MA for the 2nd Annual Wolfpack Classic. Congratulations to winners Dan Seigenberg '72, Steve Zaino '72, Bob Horne '74 and Robert Kalell '74. Led by Co-Chairs Pat Daly '74, Dan McCarthy '74 and Bruce McKinnon '74, the tournament and auction were a great success. Tournament proceeds are still being tabulated, but it’s safe to say that these golfers — from James Guilford '28 to Michael Rhodes '95 — really made a difference for BLS student athletes.

ALUMNI SEEKING SUPPORT FOR IMMIGRANT MEMORIAL
Vincent DiGangi '56 and Eliot Sohmer '56 are spearheading a group of BLS alumni advocating for the creation of a Bay State Tribute to All Immigrants memorial in the heart of Boston's North End. The group hopes that this cause resonates with other alumni and invites your support. They are particularly interested in gaining the counsel and wisdom of alumni well versed in the law, public relations and lobbying. For more information about this initiative and how you can become involved, please contact Vincent DiGangi at 781.944.6178 or Eliot Sohmer at 443.286.5007 or eliot@sohmer.net.

| Three seniors, Lili Ge, Edward Plefka and Cheng (Tony) Xing, participated in Northeastern University Young Scholars Program, a six-week program that provides students with experience in laboratory research and field work while providing career exploration and counseling. The students, led by Program Director Claire Duggan P'08, '09, presented their research findings and were honored for their completion of the program on Wednesday, August 2. |

| This spring Dr. George Speck '28 was honored by Senior Services of Alexandria, VA, as "2005 Senior Extraordinaire" according to an Alexandria Gazette Packet article. The article notes that he has delivered more than 5,000 babies in his 50 years of medical practice. |
| It is with sadness that we note the passing of 1994 Distinguished Graduate
of the Year and retired U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Robert F. McDermott
'37 on August 28. A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and the Harvard
Business School, Gen. McDermott — a decorated WWII combat pilot — was
instrumental in transforming the academic experience for cadets at the U.S.
Air Force Academy, serving as its first permanent dean of the faculty and
earning the moniker of "Father of Modern Military Education" for his
contributions. A respected business leader, he spent 24 years as chief
executive of the United States Automobile Association (USAA). |
| The Boston Globe reported in a July 26, 2006, article that Peter Kadzis '71, who had been editor of the Boston Phoenix for the last 16 years, has been named executive editor for the Phoenix Media/Communications Group, a Boston company whose operations include the Boston Phoenix, the Portland (Maine) Phoenix, the Providence Phoenix, thephoenix.com (combining content from all papers), radio station WFNX-FM, and a mobile media firm whose specialties include cellphone marketing. |
|
Jim Rooney '75, executive director of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, was credited in a Boston Globe editorial as "trying to give his city a fast makeover in the ways of being nice." Jim has successfully lobbied for a friendlier first impression for visitors to our fair city in ways that range from better signage at Logan Airport to welcoming messages from pilots during their flights.

Mike Lenahan '88 reports that The Brooklyn Latin School, a new school modeled after BLS which is scheduled to open its doors in the fall, asked him to lead a discussion with faculty and staff on his experiences at BLS. Excited to speak on his time on Avenue Louis Pasteur, he writes about Alma Mater, "easily the most positive and life-changing six years that this kid from Dorchester could have ever experienced..."
|
| Chris Wertz '90, owner of Professor Thoms' Bar in NYC, got a call from Yankee Network (YES) inviting some male and female Red Sox fans to compete with Yankee fans for tickets to the August 21, Red Sox/Yankees game. Rob McLaughlin '01, Carmel Higgins '98 and Claire Higgins '99 were the brave souls who responded to the call for volunteers. |

A TEST OF TRIVIA
You may remember our most recent trivia question from the June eNewsletter before the summer hiatus:
Q. What BLS alumnus was the founding director of one of the institutes that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is also the eponym for a human disease?
A. Lawrence E. Shulman '37, MD, PhD was the founding director of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) in 1986. He had led a similarly named Division within another Institute since 1976, and became the first NIAMS Director upon its establishment by Congress in 1986. In 1974 Dr. Shulman reported the first described cases of an autoimmune disease that came to be known as Shulman Syndrome, also called eosinophilic fasciitis.
Congratulations to Ethan Shevach '61, a well-known immunologist and one of the pioneers of one the hottest areas in immunology these days, the study of a subpopulation of white blood cells called regulatory T cells (or T-regs), whose job it is to keep the immune system from getting over-activated. Perhaps Dr. Shevach will soon be an answer to a future trivia question in this newsletter, so stay tuned!
In the meantime, this month's trivia question comes from Assistant Head Master and summer golf maestro Malcolm Flynn.
September's question:
Which prominent BLS graduate remarked "
I have seen a murderer's head cut off with a two-handed sword with less shuddering abhorrence than filled my childish breast at witnessing certain public executions at the Latin School."
Alumni seeking a free T-shirt should
send responses including your name and class year magna cum
celeritate via e-mail
