A FRESH START AT LATIN SCHOOL
Head Master Lynne Mooney Teta ’86 and school administrators greeted approximately 2400 new and returning students with their opening assemblies in early September, providing customary introductions and overviews for key areas including the role of the assistant head masters, library and guidance services as well as tutoring opportunities. The head master's remarks concentrated on the mission of Boston Latin School and the core value of respect which drives student and adult work in the BLS community. Head Master Teta shared with us a new tradition that has started at Latin School, "In our grand finale, Michael Giordano ’84, director of the McCarthy Institute, and I shared with students the closing remark from our head master during opening assemblies in the 1980's: 'Look to your left; look to your right. In six years, only one of you will graduate.' My closing to the students was simply, 'Look to your left; look to your right. I expect each of you to graduate from Boston Latin School.'"

SAVE THE DATE - ALUMNI DINNER
The Alumni Dinner is a wonderful occasion to reconnect with Alma Mater, visit with classmates and honor the contributions of fellow alumni to the Latin School community and beyond. Please join us this year on Tuesday, November 20, at The Boston Park Plaza for what will surely prove to be a very special night with our award recipients. Drum roll please...

We are pleased to announce that this year's Distinguished Graduate Award honoree is Daniel Yankelovich ’42. This award has been Boston Latin School Association's highest honor, given each year to an individual exemplifying the motto "sumus primi." Yankelovich, founder of the NY Times/Yankelovich Poll, is a world-renowned social researcher, public opinion analyst and author.

The Outstanding Recent Graduate Award recognizes the achievement of the most recent generation, highlighting individuals whose actions have served as an inspiration and motivation to others. This year's honor goes to classmates John Fitzgerald ’91 and Ailbe Glynn ’91 whose efforts with the An Tain Golf Tournament have produced much needed support for Alma Mater and several memorial scholarships.

We are pleased to also recognize the following individuals who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to Alma Mater and her alumni. During the last school year alone, nearly 350 alumni served as volunteers in various capacities. The following recipients will receive their awards with fellow honorees at the Alumni Dinner: Duncan T. O’Brien, Jr. ’78 (Joseph Desmond ’44 Award), John Page ’55 (Lee J. Dunn ’24 Award) and Louis Izzi ’87 (Edward C. Lambert Class Leadership Award).

Our congratulations and deep appreciation go out to all of these deserving award recipients. For more information about these awards, please visit the BLSA website at www.blsa.org.

BUILDING A BETTER BLS

SCHOOL NEWS
Help Wanted: Latin’s Saturday Success School is currently seeking tutors! Saturday Success School takes place at BLS on Saturday mornings from 9 to 11:30 a.m. from October to May, excluding long weekends and school vacation weeks. Tutors are now needed in English, reading, math (Algebra 1 and 2), Spanish, French, Italian, biology, German, earth science, physics, chemistry and — last but not least — Latin! Any and all interested alumni are encouraged to e-mail Michael Giordano ’84, director of the McCarthy Institute for Transition and Support, or call (617) 635-8895, ext. 213.
Save the Date Boston Latin School will host its annual auction on Saturday, November 17. The event will be held at the school. Proceeds will support scholarships for members of the class of 2008.
Kathleen Bateman ’93 has been appointed program director for the science department. Bateman, who has a B.S. in zoology from the University of New Hampshire, has taught biology and environmental science at BLS since 2004. She volunteered with the Saturday Success School Program from 2002-2007 and credits this experience with prompting her career change from the pharmaceutical manufacturing field. She was also the Private Industry Council career specialist in Boston Latin School from 2003-2004.
An extraordinary library of more than 2000 books, focusing principally on Holocaust and genocide studies, was donated to Boston Latin's Keefe Library and Media Center last spring by Stephen Feinberg, director of national outreach for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. In a single stroke, this collection, which includes comprehensive secondary source materials, hundreds of primary source documents and considerable reference and rare books, catapulted the library into what is perhaps the best public secondary school library on this subject. This book collection will enable Boston Latin students in English and history as well as modern languages to conduct serious and extensive research into a wide variety of topics. Cataloguing of the books is presently underway and the collection will be in the public stacks, available for student use, by winter 2007-2008.
The Un-Common Theatre's summer production of "RENT" directed by Theater Master Christa Crewdson, with musical direction by Masters Christopher Charig and Ryan Snyder on percussion in the pit, has won this year's New England Theatre Conference Moss Hart Award, youth theatre division. BLS students involved in the production were Tori Coyne ’10, Meg Gianniny ’10, Korey McIsaac ’08, Kathleen Pierre ’09, Billy Thompson ’08 and recent alumna Brittany Halls ’07.
Athletic Director John McDonough tells us that the BLS boys' and girls' soccer teams are off to their best starts ever and the girls' volleyball team is in a tie for first place in the DCL. There are currently 367 student athletes participating on our fall teams.

Kamaul (Reid) David ’91 has writtten a new novel, "Look What I Found Underneath the Bed," which chronicles the escapades of a young black male coming of age in Boston. Based on his own experiences in the moving industry, he shares life lessons through stories of perseverance and self-discovery.
Courtney Lewis ’94 recently returned from working as a locum veterinarian in New South Wales, Australia. She is “involved in the development of Camelot Co-housing in Berlin, MA. It is an eco-friendly neighborhood hopefully ready for move-in between April and July of 2008.”

POINTS OF PRIDE CONTEST
We have just added Lisa Allen Brown ’95 to the Points of Pride Hall of Fame! She was the first to respond with the correct response, John J. Doyle ’12, to the September question: Which head master, also a son of alma mater, is credited with establishing the Advanced Placement program giving many students the chance to receive credit for college courses on the freshman level?

Remember, we post the answer and winner of the monthly questions to the website as soon as we get the correct response. There are two unanswered questions (along with two hints) posted there right now so if you want a second shot at deciphering the answers, we'd love to hear from you. Simply visit the page once you send in your response to see if your name is up in lights! Just click here for the Points of Pride Hall of Fame.

December 2006 question:
Which Latin School alumnus/a gets credit for creating the Extracurricular Activities Fair at BLS?

March 2007 question:
In what year did the first official BLS prom take place?

What's in a name? Our next question comes to us from BLS Archivist Cynthia Curtner P’05, ’08.

October's question:
"In 1904, the editors of the Register wrote about the 'incongruity' of the names of their school." "Public Latin School," "Boy's Latin School," "Boston Latin School" - In what year did the official title of the yearly catalogue change from "Public Latin School" to the "Boston Latin School" Catalogue?

Trivia masters seeking a free T-shirt should send responses — including name and class year — magna cum celeritate via e-mail.
