A NIGHT FOR IMETTE
Nearly 500 people were on hand at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center for “A Night for Imette” on September 16. Mayor Thomas Menino P’85, City Councilor Stephen Murphy ’75, Head Master Cornelia A. Kelley H’44 and Head Master Emeritus and interim Boston Superintendent Michael Contompasis ’57 were among those joining the Saint-Guillen family and event chair Barbara Regan ’99 on stage for this occasion. Alumni from every decade — and from as far away as California — took part in the silent auction, raffle and festivities. More than $80,000 was raised for the Imette C. Saint-Guillen 1999 Scholarship Fund.

BLS MAKES BOSTON MAGAZINE'S TOP 25
Boston Magazine's September 2006 issue ranks BLS among the top 25 private and public schools in Eastern Massachusetts. BLS ranked #1 among public high schools and #9 overall (preceded by eight of the state’s top private schools). In all, the magazine ranked 60 private and 145 public high schools.

LOYALTY FUND BEGINS
On September 12, a small group of dedicated volunteers gathered at the Park Plaza Hotel to inaugurate the new Loyalty Fund, a volunteer solicitation effort that will span two months and conclude on November 21 at the Annual Alumni Dinner. The goal? To secure as many alumni commitments of $1,000 or more as possible by that date. Such prominent gifts are critical to maintain key programs at the school that are not yet endowed, including the College Resource Center, the Saturday Success School tutoring program and all sub-varsity athletic programs. If you are interested in making a gift at this level and participating in the Loyalty Fund effort, please e-mail Kate DeForest or call (617) 450-0004, ext. 26.

An Evening with Irish Tenor Anthony Kearns

Gaquin Fund at Boston Latin School. Please join us on Saturday, November 4 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Regis College Fine Arts Center. Click here for more information.

AN EVENING WITH MR. JACK REGAN
Fans of retired English master Jack Regan may want to head down to New York City for the New York Chapter’s fall program on Tuesday, November 14, to hear his tales of educating students in both the U.S. and China. The dinner, chaired by Annette Dwyer ’83, will be an elegant Chinese banquet at Chiam Chinese Cuisine on 48th Street. Tickets are $65 per person and $35 for the Class of 1997 and later. Click here for more information and to register.

BOSTON BUSINESS FORUMS RETURN
Fred Salvucci ’57, considered by many to be the “Father of the Big Dig,” will be the first Boston Business Forum speaker this year. He’ll share his vision for reshaping Boston — and his impressions on how things are today. Visit the website for updates, including date and time.

BLS / BLSA: Boston and Beyond
BLS and the BLSA continue to provide guidance to other schools and school districts around the country who are interested in emulating elements of our Latin School and its successful partnership with the BLS Association. Head Master Kelley has been quick to respond to initiatives to replicate the Latin School experience taking place in Brooklyn, NY, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, PA. In addition, there has been a steady increase in the number of inquiries by educational foundations and alumni associations into the successful workings of the BLSA. “In an effort to fulfill our mission of fellowship and social outreach, we are happy to work side by side with others who see the value of a Latin School education and want what is best for school-age children in their own cities and towns,” says BLSA President David S. Weiner ’59.

A Cinematic Salute to Leonard Bernstein ’35
October is a month to celebrate fall foliage as well as Leonard Bernstein, with a number of upcoming tributes to the Boston-bred maestro. Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts will screen two films in his honor, “Bernstein in Israel, Bernstein in Moscow,” on Wednesday, October 11 at 6 p.m. followed by “Leonard Bernstein: A Total Embrace,” at 8:15 p.m. These screenings immediately precede “Leonard Bernstein, Boston to Broadway: Concerts and Symposia” at Harvard University on October 12–14 and include a special presentation by The Boston Conservatory. Tickets for the event, which is co-presented by The Boston Jewish Film Festival, are available online at www.mfa.org.

Thanksgiving Day Game
Don't forget — the 120th Thanksgiving Day contest between the Wolfpack and the Bulldogs of Boston English High kicks off at 10 a.m. on Thursday, November 23, at Harvard Stadium. Alumni wishing to buy ads in the souvenir program can contact Athletic Director John McDonough at (617) 635-8903 by November 1.

SCHOOL NEWS
Help Wanted: Latin’s Saturday Success School is currently seeking tutors! Saturday Success School takes place at BLS on Saturday mornings from 9 to 11:30 a.m. from October to May, excluding long weekends and school vacation weeks. Tutors are now needed in English, reading, math (Algebra 1 and 2), Spanish, French, Italian, biology, German, earth science, physics, chemistry and — last but not least — Latin! Any and all interested alumni are encouraged to e-mail Michael Giordano ’84, director of the McCarthy Institute for Transition and Support, or call (617) 635-8895, ext. 213.

Boston Latin School will host its annual auction from 6 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, November 18. The event will be held at the school. Tickets are $20 each. For ticket information or to make a donation to the auction, call (617) 825-3555. Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase at $2 per ticket or six tickets for $10. There will be cash prizes for raffle winners. Proceeds from the BLS Auction will go toward scholarships for members of the class of 2007.

The Friends of BLS Crew, in the interest of compiling a history of the school’s team, invite any alumni who have knowledge of the development of crew at BLS to contact Sharon Germana P’08 via e-mail or phone at (617) 731-1858.

ALUMNI NEWS
James E. Guilford '28 will be honored at a 95th Birthday Party/Art Reception on Sunday, October 8, 3 to 8 p.m. in the Gallery at the Piano Factory. For more information, e-mail Theresa-India Young or call (617) 421-0095.

Mea Culpa: Robert F. McDermott '37 spent 24 years as chief executive of the United Services Automobile Association (USAA).

The Boston Globe reports that Rev. Bernard McLaughlin '51, who has been a priest in the Archdiocese of Boston for nearly half a century, is retiring. How would Father Mac like to be remembered? “As somebody who cared and loved. I make a big deal out of love. I believe that's why we're born.”

Michael Contompasis '57 will continue to provide stability as interim superintendent for Boston Public Schools until next July when Dr. Manuel J. Rivera, Boston's new superintendent of schools, takes office. As a recent Boston Globe article quoted Mayor Thomas Menino P'85, “I feel very confident that we don't miss a beat with Mike Contompasis as interim superintendent. He knows the system as well as anybody. He oozes confidence when he talks about education and the problems of education. He loves his job, and he loves his kids.”

Christopher Kenneally '77, author of “The Massachusetts Legacy: 150 Landmark Events That Shaped Our Nation,” has compiled a revised version “Massachusetts 101: The 101 Events That Made Massachusetts” which was released last summer. Kenneally, a former writer for the BLS Bulletin, wears his local pride like a badge. As he told The Boston Globe, “When you go to Boston Latin School from the time you're 12, all you hear about is the great local history,” he said. “I think it's important to be proud of where you're from.”

Rev. Paul B. O'Brien '82, pastor of St. Patrick Church in Lawrence, was successful in mobilizing teens, college students and young professionals to give back to the tune of $900,000, along with the support of foundations and major donors, in an effort to support the Cor Unum meal center in South Lawrence which he hopes to open this spring. The effort was largely supported by the sale of t-shirts through the website labelsareforjars.org.

Brian Carthas '01 recently signed a one-year contract with the EHC Klostersee of the Oberliga, Germany's third professional hockey division, and has begun training camp in the Bavarian Alps, as reported in The Boston Globe. Carthas was a two-time ECACHL All-Academic team member, and was named honorable mention All-Ivy his senior year at Princeton.

Mark Higgins ’03 was chosen by his Harvard football teammates as this year’s recipient of the Buz Crain Award. Established by the classmates, teammates and friends of Buz Crain, a Harvard footballer killed five years ago by a drunk driver, the Buz Crain Award is given annually to “that player, starter or scout-squad, who, through his hard work, energy and positive spirit during the pre-season football camp, provided inspiration to his fellow players and raised the level of intensity of the entire team.”

A TEST OF TRIVIA
Our October trivia question comes to us from Malcolm Flynn, BLS assistant head master, who thought an easy one was warranted as we ease back into the new academic year. This is true especially in light of the fact that the September question still remains unanswered.

October's question:
A Boston Latin School and Harvard alumnus, he benefited from the patronage of Mrs. Jack (Isabella Stewart) Gardner and later became her principal advisor in collecting the art for her museum.

Trivia masters seeking a free T-shirt should send responses — including name and class year — magna cum celeritate via e-mail.
