SOUTH SHORE CHAPTER FALL DINNER
The South Shore Chapter alumni will be gathering at Nino's Steak and Chop House in Hingham, MA on Tuesday, November 6. The reception begins at 6:30 p.m., immediately followed by dinner. The evening's guest speaker will be BLSA Trustee Chuck Clough '60, of Clough Capital Partners in Boston, who will be speaking on "Global Investment Themes for the Decade." Tickets are $35 per person. ALUMNI DINNER 2007 One of Latin School's most anticipated traditions, the Alumni Dinner, will take place on Tuesday, November 20 at the historic Boston Park Plaza Hotel. President David Weiner '59 and Head Master Lynne Mooney Teta '86 will share updates, and we will honor this year's award winners: Distinguished Graduate of the Year: Daniel Yankelovich '42; Recent Graduate of the Year: John Fitzgerald '91 and Ailbe Glynn '91; Joseph Desmond '44 Award: Duncan T. O'Brien, Jr. '78; Lee J. Dunn '24 Award: John Page '55; and Edward C. Lambert Class Leadership Award: Louis Izzi '87.

BLSA ANNUAL FUND Gifts in support of the BLSA Annual Fund make a difference for Latin School students and provide critical support for alumni programs throughout the year. OPEN POSITION - DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE
We'd like to share news of an exciting opportunity to join the staff of the BLSA as the organization prepares to launch an ambitious endowment campaign. This position reports to and supports the Vice President of Development; conducts research; prepares reports using Raiser's Edge; coordinates mailings; and assists with events. Qualifications include: 3 to 5 years of progressively responsible administrative experience, preferably in the development field; college degree preferred; working knowledge of Microsoft Windows software; experience with development software preferred; excellent organizational skills; strong attention to detail; and good writing skills. On October 10, Guidance Program Director Jim Montague and the guidance department presented the 2007 BLS College Fair. More than 150 colleges sent admissions or alumni representatives to meet with our students and families, many of whom commented about how well prepared the BLS students were. |

Help Wanted: Latin's Saturday Success School is currently seeking tutors! Saturday Success School takes place at BLS on Saturday mornings from 9 to 11:30 a.m. from October to May, excluding long weekends and school vacation weeks. Tutors are needed in English, reading, math (Algebra 1 and 2), Spanish, French, Italian, biology, German, earth science, physics, chemistry and last but not least Latin! On October 11, the Fine and Performing Arts department hosted Sandip Burman, an accomplished Tabla Artist from India. Burman's performances are marked with spontaneous innovation and tonal purity even when he is delivering complex rhythmic patterns at dazzling speeds. He led a workshop for students in the music theory classes and the A.P. Music Theory class, introducing them to the instruments and rhythms that mark his work. |

The fall sports' season is in full swing and many student athletes are setting their sights on the state tournaments. Girls' volleyball is expected to qualify for the state tournament and is in contention for the DCL championship. Both boys' and girls' soccer are still experiencing their best seasons ever. Several female swimmers are on their way to qualifying for states, as well as some cross country runners. |

On Friday, October 12, Head Master Lynne Mooney Teta '86 had the honor of representing Boston Latin School as a member of the Academic Delegation at the Inauguration of Drew Gilpin Faust, president of Harvard University. More than 200 academic delegates participated in the celebration, and Boston Latin School was one of only two secondary schools invited. As the representatives marched in the order of the founding of their institutions, only The University of Oxford, The University of Cambridge, Emmanuel College (Cambridge, England) and the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat Munich preceeded Head Master Mooney Teta in the procession. |

The first Public Declamation of the school year was held on October 16. Class VI attended and was inducted into one of BLS' finest traditions. Fifteen students from Classes IV I declaimed, out of a group of 45 who tried out. Selected pieces included: "Brother Eagle, Sister Sky" by Chief Seattle; selections from Richard III and Henry V from Shakespeare; "Speech 1851" by Sojourner Truth; and a piece from "Uncle Vanya" by Anton Chekhov. |

Save the Date Boston Latin School Parents will host their annual auction on Saturday, November 17 from 6 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $20 each. Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase at $2 per ticket or six tickets for $10. There will be cash prizes for raffle winners. The event will be held at the school. A Boston Globe article recently featured Gloria Ojimba '10, who is involved in The Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras. She is "one of seven musicians from the 119-member Boston Youth Symphony who have been nurtured in the Intensive Community Program, a nationally recognized string training program for underrepresented youths from urban communities." Ojimba is also a member of the step squad at BLS and enjoys hip-hop, as well as rhythm and blues. |

Two upcoming events that you won't want to miss will showcase the talents of BLS drama students. The fall show this year is "Mrs. Bob Cratchit's Wild Christmas Binge." Performances are scheduled for: Thursday, December 6 (3 p.m. and 7 p.m.), Friday, December 7 (7 p.m.) and Saturday, December 8 (7 p.m.). Tickets are $7 for students/seniors and $10 for adults. You are also invited to join the BLS community at the Improv Show on Friday, December 14 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $3 for students/seniors and $5 for adults. BLS Youth Can is supporting an aggressive recycling campaign as part of a contest called "Do Something!" Receptacles have been provided for students to recycle cans, bottles, paper and batteries. Students and faculty are pledging to reduce their energy consumption in many ways. Student representatives are sharing educational materials during homeroom presentations and through BLS-TV. The goal of the group is for every member of the community to take action to support the environment. |

The late William "Bo" Holland '61 has been posthumously honored for his public service by Shelter, Inc. They have established The William E. "Bo" Holland Public Service Award. He dedicated his life to serving the people of Greater Boston. During his three years as a member of the Shelter, Inc. board, Holland's commitment and dedication to helping further the mission to end homelessness for good truly embodied the ideals of a public servant. |

According to the Boston Globe, Gerald Howland '66 was recently honored as a Henry L. Shattuck Public Service Award recipient on October 3. Howland, a history teacher, was the former headmaster of Another Course to College and is credited with helping the school grow from serving grades 11 and 12 to a four-year program that offers alternative routes to higher education. The Boston Municipal Research Bureau, a private watchdog group, has given the award since 1985. |

Julie Kong '93, a 10th and 12th grade chemistry teacher at Salem High School in Salem, has been named Teacher of the Year in Massachusetts in the 12th annual Wal-Mart and Sam's Club State Teacher of the Year program. Kong was honored at a special surprise ceremony at the school, and in her honor the school received a $10,000 grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation. |
