VETERANS' DAY REMEMBRANCE
In honor of Veterans' Day and the thousands of alumni whose military service helped safeguard our nation, BLSA has compiled a listing of those alumni lost in our nation's wars as a tribute to all those who continue this legacy of service both at home and abroad today. View the listing online at www.blsa.org.

MERRY MCAS SCORES
On October 18, Boston’s three exam schools had cause for celebration when the MCAS standings of their students were released, placing 10th graders at the top of the chart in both English and math scores. Boston Latin’s class of 2008 placed first in both English and math; Boston Latin Academy placed third in both English and math; while the O’Bryant School for Math and Science placed fourth in math and eighth in English when ranked with all other public schools in the state. “We are extremely proud of the performance of our students,” said Head Master Cornelia A. Kelley H’44, who noted that BLS eighth graders placed second in math and fifth in English. “They deserve this recognition for their consistent and diligent academic efforts.”

AN EVENING WITH MR. JACK REGAN
Fans of retired English master Jack Regan may want to head down to New York City for the New York Chapter’s fall program on Tuesday, November 14, to hear his tales of educating students in both the U.S. and China. The dinner, chaired by Annette Dwyer ’83, will be an elegant Chinese banquet at Chiam Chinese Cuisine on 48th Street. Tickets are $65 per person and $35 for the Class of 1997 and later. Click here for more information and to register.

ALUMNI DINNER 2006
Join us for one of Latin School’s most anticipated traditions as we celebrate the bonds shared by each generation of alumni, and pay tribute to this year’s Graduate Award winners: Distinguished Graduate of the Year Andrew J. Viterbi ’52 and Recent Graduate of the Year Rebecca Galeota ’92. The 2006 Alumni Dinner takes place on Tuesday, November 21 at the historic Boston Park Plaza Hotel. It’s a night not be missed! Tickets will not be available at the door — don’t miss out, register today!

LAST CALL FOR LOYALTY FUND EFFORT
Time is running out to secure your part in this year’s Loyalty Fund effort, a volunteer solicitation initiative that concludes on November 21 at the annual Alumni Dinner. The goal? To secure as many alumni commitments of $1,000 or more as possible. Such leadership gifts are key to maintain programs at the school that are not yet endowed, including the College Resource Center, the Saturday Success School tutoring program and all sub-varsity athletics. Interested? Please e-mail Kate DeForest or call (617) 450-0004, ext. 26.

BOMB THE BLUE, DON THE PURPLE

Don't forget — the 120th Thanksgiving Day contest between the Wolfpack and the Bulldogs of Boston English High kicks off at 10 a.m. on Thursday, November 23, at Harvard Stadium. Alumni wishing to buy posh purple BLS apparel, accessories or gifts in anticipation of the big game should check out the full collection of sweatshirts, T-shirts and more at the BLS Store located at www.blsa.org. A portion of each sale supports BLS.

The classes of 1985, 1986 and 1988 are also invited to join in as classmates from 1987 pay tribute to their late Class President Julius Babbitt '87 and gear up for spring reunion celebrations. SCHOOL NEWS

Student activism is alive and well at BLS. On October 24 as part of the instructional plan in the Facing History & Ourselves class, students urged fellow students to call the White House's comment phone lines from noon to 1 p.m. to ask the government to take notice and action against the genocide in Darfur region of Sudan.

The Saturday Success School program is still seeking tutors! Saturday Success takes place at BLS on Saturday mornings from 9 to 11:30 a.m. from October to May, excluding long weekends and school vacation weeks. Tutors are now needed in English, reading, math (Pre-Calculus, Algebra 1 and 2), Spanish, French, Italian, biology, German, earth science and — last but not least — Latin! Any and all interested alumni are encouraged to e-mail Michael Giordano ’84, director of the McCarthy Institute for Transition and Support, or call (617) 635-8895, ext. 213.
On Halloween morning, a student string ensemble played selections from Shostakovitch by the Alma Mater statue in the ceremonial main foyer under the watchful eye of student teacher Jacob Larmand.

Boston Latin School Parents will host their annual auction from 6 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, November 18. The event will be held at the school. Tickets are $20 each. For ticket information or to make a donation to the auction, call (617) 825-3555. Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase at $2 per ticket or six tickets for $10. There will be cash prizes for raffle winners. Proceeds from the BLS auction will go toward scholarships for members of the class of 2007.

Head Master Cornelia A. Kelley H'44 received a letter of high praise from Harvard's Widener Library for Oyinkansola Ayobiojo '07. Ayobiojo, who worked at the library last summer, was commended for outstanding work on advanced projects, performing duties "while maintaining a can-do attitude and a great sense of humor, assets that made her a pleasure to work with."
The Friends of BLS Crew are working on a history of the BLS team and invite any alumni who have knowledge of the team’s development to e-mail Sharon Germana P’08 or call (617) 731-1858.

The Talented and Gifted (TAG) Alumni Reunion Gala will be held on Saturday, November 25, in UMass-Boston’s Campus Center Ballroom at

ALUMNI NEWS

Norman B. Leventhal ’33 was counted among the first recipients of the Justine Mee Liff Spirit Award, handed out at Emerald Necklace Conservancy's Party in the Park held in the Back Bay Fens this October. The awards were given in honor of the late Justine Liff P’97, ’99, the former Boston Parks Commissioner.

Fr. Robert Hennessey ’70 of Most Holy Redeemer of East Boston was recently named as a new auxiliary bishop of Boston by Archbishop Sean O'Malley.

The New England College of Optometry (NECO) announced that Elizabeth Chen '81, a former CEO of two biotech companies in Massachusetts, has been elected as its sixth president. Chen, a member of BLSA’s Board of Trustees, has held a number of leadership positions in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries for the past 20 years. She is the first woman and the second non-optometrist to head NECO, the oldest optometry college in the country.

Cindy Diggs ’83 of Peace Boston was pictured in the Boston Globe consoling a woman as she wept at memories evoked by the newly designed MBTA memorial bus titled "Remembering Boston's Children 1980-2005" recently unveiled at City Hall Plaza.

James Barned-Smith ’06 became Troop 6 of Brookline’s 90th Eagle Scout. As reported in the Brookline TAB, Barned-Smith's service project involved rebuilding the playground at the Vineyard Church in Cambridge. He organized more than 100 hours of volunteer service, including time spent building two picnic tables and landscaping, to complete his project.

A TEST OF TRIVIA
Let’s start with a little housekeeping for our popular trivia contest. In the spirit of fair play, we’d like to issue a friendly reminder that alumni may only win once during an academic year. Now enough of the fine print; let’s get back to the trivia.

Congratulations go to Paul M. J. Suchecki ’72 who knew that it was Bernard Berenson who benefited from the patronage of Mrs. Jack (Isabella Stewart) Gardner and later became her principal advisor in collecting the art for her museum. Berenson entered BLS in 1881.

In tribute to our servicemen and servicewomen, November's trivia question speaks to those who make the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the armed forces. It comes to us from Alumni Director Lynn Flaherty.

November's question:
Which Latin School alumnus was killed-in-action while commanding the 1st Cavalry (Airmobile) when the helicopter he piloted crashed while enroute to visit wounded troops in South Vietnam? He also served at the end of World War II and in the Korean War. This son of Alma Mater was one of the youngest major generals in the United States Army during his tenure.

Trivia masters seeking a free T-shirt should send responses — including name and class year — magna cum celeritate via e-mail.
