ALUMNI DINNER NEWS
More than 300 alumni and guests turned out for the annual Alumni Dinner, held at the Sheraton Boston Hotel on November 23. Two New Yorkers received top honors, with Village Voice columnist, jazz enthusiast and prolific author Nat Hentoff ’41 recognized as Distinguished Graduate of the Year, and Eugene Wade ’88 receiving the Outstanding Recent Graduate Award for his efforts in founding companies that help low-income students reach academic success in the country’s largest urban areas. Two additional awards were also given: the Lee J. Dunn Award to longtime BLSA volunteer, supporter and trustee William Wright ’69 of the University of Massachusetts, and a posthumous awarding of the Dr. Joseph F. Desmond Award to Robert E. Holland ’64, one of the city’s top labor attorneys as well as a proud and dedicated alumnus and BLSA advocate of many years. To learn more about BLSA’s graduate awards program, please click here..

TRIVIA WINNER
While we were exceptionally pleased by the strong response of alumni to last month's trivia question—most of whom answered correctly, we might add—only one can take the proverbial crown. With the correct answer of Richard Saltonstall Greenough, class of 1829, as the sculptor who created the Alma Mater statue, last month's proud victor is Kristine Zaleskas '87, who craftily found the needed information on the school's website. Congratulations Kristine!

Those pining for a free BLS T-shirt or hat should not despair, as we have another challenging question for our players (the first correct respondent will take the prize) as we pay homage to the annual Latin-English Thanksgiving Game:

November's question:
Name the only father-son combination inducted into the BLS Varsity Club Hall of Fame.

Please send responses, including your name and class year, via e-mail to blsa@blsa.org!

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL
Congratulations to junior Anneke Schwob who has been invited as one of six students representing Massachusetts at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, DC, in February. Schwob will give an oral presentation of her science research project "Telomeres and Neural Development" which won first place in the State Science Fair in 2004.
Congratulations to the Math Team for winning the second meet of the Eastern Division of the GBML held at Newton North on Wednesday, November 10. Individually, senior Yuanjian Li and junior Zhilong Lin had perfect scores. Among the top scorers were sophomores Tim Lu, Henry Qin, Sean Wu and Tony Xing.
FOX-TV should be quaking now that Boston Latin has launched its own "Idol" talent competition! Started on November 17, talented teens who can carry a tune may participate in the televised contest, airing on BLS-TV in the morning. The final competition of "BLS IDOL" is slated for January.

INSTRUMENTAL ASSISTANCE
Visual and Performing Arts Director Paul Pitts '73 seeks any and all instruments that alumni may want to donate to his minions of young musical talents at the school. Interested parties should e-mail Mr. Pitts at pjpitts@aol.com

TUTORS NEEDED
Saturday Success School is recruiting new tutors for the new year, with the first session starting on Saturday, January 18. Please contact McCarthy Institute for Transition and Support Associate Director Michelle Gallant '96 for more information at 617.635.8895, ext. 148.

CAREER NETWORKING SESSION
A workshop is being planned in January as BLSA seeks willing volunteers who can mentor younger alumni in making career choices, as well as mentors with an interest in hiring alumni (for summer or permanent employment) in their respective fields. For more information, please contact Lorraine Driscoll '94.

PHONATHONS ARE BACK
The next round of volunteer calling sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, November 30 and Tuesday, December 7 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the offices of Merrill Lynch at 125 High Street in Boston. Bring or meet a friend and join us as we make calls to support BLS through the Annual Fund. Alumni and parents are welcome for snacks, a brief orientation and phoning. Due to limited seating, pre-registration is required. Please contact Lorraine Driscoll '94 with questions or to register.

ALUMNI IN THE NEWS
Dr. Stephen Camer '57 was lauded on November 13 as the second recipient of the Kirkby Memorial Service Award, the highest honor given periodically by New England Baptist Hospital "to an individual who has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the mission of the hospital....Throughout his tenure at the Baptist, Dr. Camer has lived the hospital’s core values of respect, ownership, superior service and excellence. His respect for his patients, colleagues and our nursing staff has been unwavering." Dr. Camer began his practice at New England Baptist Hospital in 1975 following his residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center in New York and a fellowship at Lahey Clinic. He was named chief of surgery in 1993 and chair of the department in 1997. He also serves as a clinical instructor in surgery for Harvard Medical School.
Raffi Yessayan '86 was featured on WCVB-TV's "CHRONICLE" program on Wednesday, November 17 for his outstanding work as chief of the anti-gang unit of the Suffolk Country District Attorney's Office in Boston. A longtime assistant district attorney, Yessayan regularly visits with local school students as part of the "Understanding Violence" curriculum. Also featured for his anti-gang work was past BLS parent, the Rev. Eugene Rivers P'88
