375th COMMEMORATIVE BOOK
In conjunction with the school’s 375th anniversary in 2010, the Association will publish a book commemorating the school’s history since its 300th anniversary in 1935. This book will be anything but a dry history. It will be full of the stories and memories that have filled its students’ minds and hearts in the past 75 years. In conjunction with this book we want to list all the teams, clubs, musical organizations and other activities of the school that garnered local, regional, state or national recognition. If you were a member of such an organization, please let us know more about those accomplishments. We don’t want to leave anyone out, so please take a moment and tell us about your group. Send your remembrances to blsa@blsa.org.

Two BLS English teachers, Kay Moon and Meredith Elliott, along with a number of BLS students were featured in a NY Times article about the enduring resonance of "The Great Gatsby" for high school students--perhaps especially for BLS students. Sara Rimer, a national education reporter for the Times, spent two days in Moon's and Elliott's classrooms, seeing students' work and discussing the book with them. Additionally, Charles Scribner III, whose great-grandfather was Fitzgerald's first publisher, who oversees the Fitzgerald Archives has requested the BLS students send their final projects--original newspapers from the 1920s--to be housed in the archive. Susan Moran, BLS' English program director enthuses, "the whole thing is a great tribute to our students and their teachers." |

POINTS OF PRIDE CONTEST
Our congratulations go out to William J. Davis Jr. '78 for solving the February conundrum: Which BLS head master, appointed while still a senior at Harvard, is credited with instituting misdemeanor marks and the practice of declamation, fostering the beginnings of a library and implementing the first regular reports of scholarship to parents? The correct answer was Benjamin Apthorp Gould, appointed head master in 1814. Visit the Points of Pride Contest webpage to see all of our proud winners and the two unsolved Points of Pride mysteries.
March's question:
In the late ‘90s, BLS celebrated a historic event: the first legacy family of female origin was created. Which mother and daughter started this tradition: the first daughter of an alumna to graduate from BLS in the school’s history?
BLS history buffs seeking a free T-shirt should send responses — including name and class year — magna cum celeritate via e-mail. Note: Alumni may win only once during an academic year.
