HAPPY NEW YEAR!
The Boston Latin School Association wishes the entire Latin School family a happy and healthy new year!

FOOD BANK SERVICE EVENT SUCCESS
Latin School alumni (and a parent) kicked off the holiday season by participating in a BLSA-sponsored service project at the Greater Boston Food Bank on December 6. Bill Hogan ’69 deserves particular mention as the individual who loaded in all 5,832 pounds of food that our band of volunteers sorted. Each volunteer made more than 224 meals for people who are hungry and left with their holiday spirits high. Plans are in the works for future nights at the Food Bank.

ANNUAL FUND
Looking for a way to make a difference at Latin School? Consider a gift to the BLSA Annual Fund. The Fund provides the financial resources necessary to sustain Latin School’s margin of excellence while also allowing the flexibility to pursue new opportunities. If you would like to read more about the Annual Fund, meet one of our student leaders, review the FAQs or make a gift online, click here. For more information, please e-mail Director of Individual Giving Kate DeForest.

HOCKEY ALUMNI
Take to the ice with your old hockey teammates as the BLSA Varsity Club hosts the second annual Alumni Hockey Game & Reunion at Harvard’s Bright Hockey Center on Friday, January 19. Skaters and non-skaters are invited! Click here for more information and tickets.

SCIENCE DAY
Mark your calendars for the BLS Science Day on Saturday, February 3, 2007. Science Day includes the 61st Science Fair where students, who have done individual research projects, will be vying to earn a place at the city and regional competitions. These are competitions that have really heated up since the introduction of the mentorship program that teams BLS students with professional scientists from the community. One of the newest features is a Science Expo. The Expo is a chance for students who love science, but can't commit to a research project. It is a great opportunity for students to demonstrate their enjoyment and engagement by participating in student-led interactive presentations designed to demonstrate some of the scientific principles they have found most interesting in their classes. Last year, more than 200 students participated as Fair candidates or Expo presenters. The Expo takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Science Fair projects will be open to the public from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. Science Day culminates in the BLS auditorium at 1:00 p.m. with a presentation by keynote speaker Elizabeth Chen '81, president of The New England College of Optometry, followed by the presentation of the science fair prizes, including the coveted Doc Shea Award for Excellence in Chemistry and Richard Spillane Award for Excellence in Physics.

DIALOGUE & DISCOURSE
The BLS Alumni Speakers Series continues on February 27, 2007 at 7 p.m., with Father Paul O’Brien, pastor of St. Patrick’s Church in Lawrence, MA. He is one of the founders of Cor Unum Meal Center, an organization dedicated to the “truth that no man, woman or child should ever be hungry.” Fr. O’Brien will discuss the realities of poverty and hunger in today’s society. Holland + Knight Law Office will serve as our host for the evening. Click here for more details.

BLSA ON THE ROAD: FLORIDA
Details are nearly set for BLSA’s trips to the Sunshine State this February and March. Make plans to come out and visit with Head Master Cornelia A. Kelley H’44 and BLSA President David S. Weiner ’59 as we travel south to visit our alumni. Check the BLSA calendar for details about events in Palm Beach, Naples, Sarasota, and, of course, Ft. Myers. Tickets for the annual Red Sox spring training outing and barbecue are limited. Click here to purchase your tickets today!

SCHOOL NEWS

Ms. Inez Middleton, a well respected and recently retired member of the BLS English Department, passed away on December 7, 2006, peacefully surrounded by her family. Ms. Middleton truly touched the lives of many in her years of teaching. The Boston Latin School community extends heartfelt sympathy to all of her loved ones.

On December 5, two representatives from Turkey visited BLS to garner ideas as they plan to create a similar institution in their country. Boston Latin has had a number of international representatives visit the school in recent months, including those from China, Ireland and Kazakhstan.

The Saturday Success School program is still seeking tutors! Saturday Success takes place at BLS on Saturday mornings from 9 to 11:30 a.m. from October to May, excluding long weekends and school vacation weeks. Are you able to give a few hours to today’s students? Interested alumni are encouraged to e-mail Michael Giordano ’84, director of the McCarthy Institute for Transition and Support, or call (617) 635-8895, ext. 213.

Boston Latin students once again stepped up to the plate for the school's annual food drive, collecting a total of 2,168 pounds of food (an increase of 533 pounds over last year's collection) for donation to the Shattuck Shelter in Jamaica Plain. Kudos go to the Wolfpack Volunteers as well as Beth Malone and Christine Feehily in the Main Office for their hard work on this effort to help feed the hungry and homeless in Boston.

The Friends of BLS Crew are working on a history of the school's team and invite any alumni who have knowledge of its development to e-mail Sharon Germana P’08 or call (617) 731-1858.

ALUMNI NEWS

As reported in the community Bulletin newspaper, William "Doc" Reid '30 was honored for his long career of service to the city’s students. Reid, a former headmaster at South Boston High School, was rewarded this past December for his commitment to the South Boston community with the dedication of the school library at the South Boston Educational Complex. BPS Superintendent Michael Contompasis '57 was in attendance at the dedication ceremony.

Kevin Bowers '41 was recently featured in the Holbrook Sun for bringing his love of chess to the community. A former guidance counselor at BLS, he is offering a class for members of the Holbrook community at the historical society there. Recently retired from Holbrook Junior/Senior High School, he taught Latin and for about seven years, led the school’s chess club. Bowers confesses that he doesn’t play very well. “I have been beaten by my pupils many times,” he said. He must be one great teacher then!

Patrick Roche ’46 has an altruistic philosophy that drives his support of causes near and dear to his heart. In a recent feature in the Marshfield Mariner, he explained “For me, it’s the thing to do. If you can afford to do it and take care of someone else, you should do it.” The $1 million donation he and wife Barbara are making to the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield’s “Build the Future” campaign for a new $8 million facility demonstrates his commitment to communities and programs for today’s youth. In addition to their many community-based philanthropic commitments, this former Distinguished Graduate of the year and his wife are amongst Boston Latin School’s most loyal and generous supporters, ensuring the vitality of our academic and athletics programs for the next generation of BLS students.
Russell Conn '71 was recently named by Boston Magazine as one of the top 100 lawyers in Massachusetts based on its polling of over 31,000 attorneys in the state.

The Boston Globe reports that Kelly Tynan '96, executive director of West Roxbury Main Streets, has formed an alliance with her counterpart in Hyde Park in their struggle against a common foe: The highway-oriented shopping centers that lure customers from neighborhood businesses. The two Main Streets programs sponsored a December 17 evening of theatre, dining, and shopping to boost the two business areas. Hyde Park resident Mayor Thomas Menino P'85 was scheduled to attend the dinner. Tynan's philosophy is "if you have to shop somewhere other than our neighborhood district, we hope it will be in another neighborhood shopping district."

POINTS OF PRIDE CONTEST
Alas, the December history question has stumped our alumni base so we must forge ahead with the January question provided to us by Alumni Director Lynn Page Flaherty.

January's question:
Which west coast alumnus is famous for inventing the first SMTP e-mail server and the Domain Name System?

BLS history buffs seeking a free T-shirt should send responses — including name and class year — magna cum celeritate via e-mail. Note: Alumni may win only once during an academic year.
