BLSA IN THE CITY OF BROTHERLY LOVE
Time’s running out to register for the Head Masters’ Reception at The Union League in Philadelphia on Friday, February 9. Head Master Cornelia A. Kelley H’44 and Head Master Emeritus Michael G. Contompasis ’57 will be on hand to visit with alumni and share updates from Alma Mater. Click here for details and to register now.
DIALOGUE & DISCOURSE
What do CNN, Conan O’Brien and Cincinnati Reds star Sean Casey have in common? All have highlighted or helped the work of Father Paul O’Brien ’82, pastor of St. Patrick’s Parish in Lawrence, MA and a man committed to fighting hunger and poverty. Father Paul will be the featured speaker on Tuesday, February 27, as Dialogue & Discourse: The Boston Latin School Alumni Speakers Series continues with a look at “Poverty and Hunger Today.” Click here to make your reservations for what promises to be an exciting and relevant discussion of urban issues.
FUN IN THE SUN
The airline tickets have been purchased and the sunscreen packed (in a 3 oz. container within a quart-sized plastic bag, of course). BLSA is ready to head south to visit alumni in Florida. The journey begins on Sunday, February 9, in Palm Beach, with a luncheon at Café Boulud, chaired by Barbara and John Ganick ’57 and Kenneth Stanger ’64.
For more information click here. In March, we head across the state where Sarasota alumni will gather on Saturday, March 10, for a luncheon at Marina Jack. Visit our website for more details and to register. We’ll conclude the weekend with the ever-popular BLSA Day at the Ballpark when the Red Sox take on the Orioles in spring training action in Ft. Myers on Sunday, March 11. Tickets for all events are on sale now; just click the links above or use the calendar at left.
Please note, the Naples event announced in earlier editions will not take place this year. We hope to see you in Ft. Myers or Sarasota!
ALUMNI BOOK CLUB
It’s not too late to fulfill your New Year’s resolution and read more. Simply join the Alumni Book Club! Our first selection is "Mountains Beyond Mountains:
The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, The Man Who Would Cure the World" by Tracy Kidder. Get your copy now and participate in our first Book Club meeting on Thursday, March 15 at 6:30 p.m. at BLS. Led by Assistant Head Master Malcolm Flynn and former English Master Rachel Skerritt ’95, the Book Club will follow the same study questions given to Class II and Class I students for their summer reading. It promises to be a scintillating conversation! Click here to learn more about the Book Club, get a copy of the study guide or learn where you can join a conversation outside Boston.
HAIL TO THE CHIEF
Since Los Angeles first started meeting in 1968, our southern California alumni have always been ahead of the pack. On March 24, the Los Angeles Chapter will join with the San Diego Chapter to host the first of what will undoubtedly be many tributes to Head Master Emeritus and Boston School Superintendent Michael G. Contompasis ’57 as he prepares to retire from the Boston Public School system. After the news of the last week, his remarks will surely focus on the difficulty of recruiting a superintendent for a major urban school system. Join us for the toasts—and roasts—at The Clubhouse in Costa Mesa, CA, on Saturday, March 24. Co-chaired by Pamela James ’76 and Danielle Harrell ‘92 and hosted by leadership of both chapters, the luncheon will cost $40 per person ($35 for young alumni in classes 1992-2006). Tickets are available now by clicking here.

REUNION UPDATES
With Reunion Weekend just three months away, class committees are busy putting the finishing touches on their celebration plans for May 10-12. BLSA is thrilled to announce that The Marsels, led by Dwight Streetman, brother of Ashley Streetman ‘60, will be providing the music to keep attendees dancing all night long. A block of rooms has been reserved at The Park Plaza Hotel for BLS alumni; call (800) 225-2008 or (617) 426-2000 and reference “Boston Latin” to make your reservations. | On Tuesday, February 6, Boston Latin School will host 60 students and a team of administrators from Brooklyn Latin School as they experience first hand our Public Declamation, enjoy lunch with members of the senior class in the Dining Hall and take in a presentation by Michael Giordano ’84, director of the McCarthy Institute for Transition and Support. |
The Class of 2007 Committee will be making phone calls to the Class of 1957 on Tuesday, February 6, “officially” inviting them back to school for their 50th reunion. |
| Father Paul O'Brien ’82 will be the keynote speaker at the National Honor Society induction at the school on Wednesday, February 7. |
| Sherri Lowe '08 has joined Hale McAnulty '07 as a student intern in the BLSA offices. Internships are a valuable opportunity to help our students to explore different workplace settings and hone their skills. If you have an internship program or would like to explore the development of one in your workplace, please e-mail Roselys Esteve ’02, the Private Industry Council (PIC) Coordinator at BLS. |
| Boston Latin was referenced on a recent episode of NBC's "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip." Matthew Perry's character was talking about his nephew, who was looking at colleges, and that he was "carrying a 3.8 at Boston Latin." Within the same conversation, Viacom Chairman Sumner Redstone '40 was also mentioned, though not in connection to the school. "Studio 60" is written by Aaron Sorkin and, if memory serves, Boston Latin was also referenced on another little show he wrote a few years back called "The West Wing." |
The Friends of BLS Crew are working on a history of the school's team and invite any alumni who have knowledge of its development to e-mail Sharon Germana P’08 or call (617) 731-1858. |
| ALUMNI NEWS |
The Silver Cross Sehring Medal of Excellence for Healthcare was given to Dr. Irving "Bill" Rudman '41 on December 9, 2006. Rudman retired in 1996 after 42 years of practice at Silver Cross Hospital as a Board Certified surgeon. Rudman is actively involved as an elder hostel volunteer, providing tutoring and medical services to Navajo Indians in Arizona. |
Harvard Business School Marketing Professor Stephen Greyser '52 recently shared, in the Boston Herald, his perspective on the TJX Companies' attempts to explain their overall handling of a computer security breach. Greyser, our 2005 Distinguished Graduate of the Year, described the company's reaction to the situation, as well as the company referring to itself as a victim, as "strange."

| The Massachusetts Hall of Black Achievement at Bridgewater State College will recognize the accomplishments of several individuals including Melvin B. Miller '52 at its 19th Annual Heritage Celebration. The Brockton Enterprise reports that the Mary Hudson Onley Achievement Award, named after one of Bridgewater's first graduates of color, will be presented to Miller, founder of the Bay State Banner, a weekly newspaper advocating the interests of Greater Boston's African American community. He has served as the publisher and editor of the publication since its inception in 1965. Miller, prior to the establishment of the Banner, served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts and was a founding partner in the law firm of Fitche, Miller and Tourse, a primarily corporate law firm. He was vice president and general counsel of WHDH-TV from 1982-1993. He is a graduate of Harvard University and Columbia Law School. |
| One of the nation's premier experts on global terrorism and author of the new book "Breakpoint" Richard Clarke '68, our 2003 Distinguished Graduate of the Year, invited questions on a variety of topics during a live chat on Boston.com last week including his new novel (a thriller set in Boston in 2012), "the political and other effects of emerging technology, the wisdom of advertising with what look like bombs, the President's surge in Iraq or what it's like to be a Red Sox fan in Washington." |
| Ken Gloss '68 was recently featured in the Kingston Reporter after a speaking engagement at the Kingston Public Library. Gloss, a regular on PBS' Antique Road Show and owner of Brattle Book Shop in Boston (the shop is America’s oldest continuously operated bookshop as well as one of the country’s largest), spoke to a South Shore audience about his rare and interesting finds over the years. |
Peace activist Cindy Diggs '83 was recently featured in the Boston Globe for her efforts promoting peace in conjunction with the Boston hip-hop community, and as founder of Peace Boston. She has a new radio show on WTCH 106.1 based in Grove Hall in Roxbury. This year the group hopes to get Boston's hip-hop artists to donate songs to
a "Peace in the Streets" CD, and will also keep selling Start Peace T-shirts. Diggs said in the article that about half the revenue from T-shirt sales is going toward the CD and half has gone to some of the 12 youth programs her group works with, including the Peace Institute and Save the Youth Ministries. Diggs is a firm believer that "peace is possible."
|
| Boston Firefighter Victor Gaybor ’87 was featured on Channel 5 (WCVB) Eye Opener's segment about what superstitions folks had around the New England Patriot’s quest for victory. |
Sinead Keegan '01 just embarked on an incredible around-the-world adventure. For the next year and a half she will be traveling first to Argentina and
then Peru, visiting the non-profit where she "worked
last spring teaching sports to a school of 800 children whose families were victims of internal strife, and now they live on top of an old dump just outside of Lima city
center." She is currently "in Brazil and then it is on to Europe (mainly eastern Europe),
Africa (Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa) followed by Asia next (China, Tibet, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and
India), and finally we´ll finish by working and traveling around Australia and New Zealand." She will be sending us journal entries along the way so if you would like to keep track of this world traveler, please visit the BLSA website for periodic updates.

POINTS OF PRIDE CONTEST
Congratulations go to Laura DiAngelis '00 for solving our January question. The first SMTP e-mail server and domain name system were invented by our very own Paul Mockapetris '66.
As our thoughts turn to Valentine's Day and matters of the heart, our February heart-related question comes to us from Alumni Director Lynn Flaherty.

BLS history buffs seeking a free T-shirt should send responses, including name and class year, magna cum celeritate via e-mail. Note: Alumni may win only once during an academic year.
