HAPPY HOLIDAYS
The Boston Latin School Association wishes the entire Latin School family a joyous holiday season and a happy and healthy new year! At this special time of year, we'd like to express our heartfelt thanks to all of our dedicated alumni who have given back so much of their time, treasure and talents to Alma Mater. Fiat omnibus pax!

The 2007 BLSA Alumni Dinner held on Tuesday, November 20, brought together approximately 325 alumni, students and faculty at The Boston Park Plaza to recognize distinguished and outstanding recent graduates as well as volunteer awardees. Participants included members of the class of 1929 to our most recent alumni from the class of 2007. Our thanks to the event’s generous sponsors: An Tain; Atlantic Associates; Charles Longfield ’74; Patrick Roche ’46; Thomas Ryan Jr. ’59; and Paul Toomey ’86. It was a wonderful night! It also subsidizes local and regional alumni activities where classmates reconnect with each other and the school. Click here to make a gift online or call (617) 450-0004 for more information.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 2, 2008 for BLS Science Day! The day includes both the 62nd Science Fair and 3rd annual Science Expo. The Science Fair is where students vie to earn a place at the city and regional competitions. The competition amongst BLS students has heated up since the introduction of the Science Mentor Program. The Mentor Program teams students with professional scientists from the community. The Expo includes many presentations and exhibitions for visitors of all ages. The BLS students lead visitors through a variety of interactive demonstrations designed to showcase some of the scientific principles the students have learned at BLS. The Expo is ideal for families and BLS is handicapped accessible! The Expo will begin at 10:30 a.m. and run until 12:30 p.m. Science fair projects will be open to the public from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Join us for an awards ceremony in the Seevak Room on the third floor at 1:00 p.m. where this year’s keynote speaker, Head Master Lynne Mooney Teta ’86, will address the participants and visitors. Science fair prizes, including the coveted Doc Shea Award for Excellence in Chemistry and Richard Spillane award for Excellence in Physics, will be awarded and our raffle winners will be announced. Congratulations to the Fine and Performing Arts department which is once again a finalist for a GRAMMY Signature Award.

It is a very special year for BLS jazz pianist Jake Sherman '08. He has been selected for the 2008 Gibson/Baldwin GRAMMY Jazz Band. The GRAMMY Jazz Ensemble program selects top high school instrumentalists and singers to receive an all-expense-paid trip to perform in the Jazz Choir, Big Band or Combo at GRAMMY week events (Feb. 2-11, 2008). The high school of each entrant receives educational music product and nearly $2 million in scholarships are offered each year to selectees. To read more go to GRAMMY in the Schools and click on "Jazz Ensembles." This talented student musician was also recently named as a Stan Getz/Clifford Brown All Star by the National Foundation for Advancement of the Arts. Each year they receive over 7,500 applications in all art forms, 140 students are invited to travel to Florida, all expenses paid to study and collaborate for one week. Out of the jazz students, five are selected (one pianist, one bass, one drummer and two horns) to become Stan Getz/Clifford Brown All Stars. Those selected rehearse for three days with Rufus Reid and then fly to the IAJE convention to perform in the opening concert as one of the headliners.

ALUMNI NEWS

Warren Cikins '47 recently addressed a meeting in the Little Rock, AK State Capitol on both civil rights and prison reform. He was the legislative assistant" to heroic Congressman Brooks Hays of Little Rock, when the Central High School crisis broke out. It was a remarkable experience dealing with what was essentially an insurrection against the U.S." He later served as a lieutenant to Chief Justice Warren Burger in his effort to reform criminal justice, emphasizing prison literacy training and job training.

Michael Contompasis '57 is serving as director of intergovernmental relations and external affairs for the city of Boston after more than 42 years of service as a teacher, head master, chief operating officer and superintendent.

Boston Municipal Court Administrative Attorney Michael O'Loughlin '85 was recognized for his part in coordinating training efforts in the use of CPR and the Automated External Defibrillator (AED). It is a program conducted by the Boston Municipal Court in conjunction with the Trial Court's Security Department. Court officers were able to revive a Boston police officer who collapsed at the Brooke Courthouse earlier this year thanks to the training that O'Loughlin and his colleagues coordinate.

POINTS OF PRIDE CONTEST
Brian Nolan '88, who credits his six years in the BLS Pep Band, is our November winner to: What are the words to the BLS Fight Song? To see how close your version came, please visit the Points of Pride Hall of Fame on our website.

Our final question of 2007 comes to us from Cynthia Curtner P’05, ’08 the BLS archivist.

December's question:
A certain Boston landmark was in part funded by donations of citizens from all parts of the state. A list of donors who helped build the monument includes 95 boys of the “Boston Latin Grammar School.” The donations varied from $1 to $10, and amounted to over $400.

What Boston landmark did the BLS Boys help erect?

History masters seeking a free T-shirt should send responses — including name and class year — magna cum celeritate via e-mail.
