HAPPY HOLIDAYS
The Boston Latin School Association wishes you and yours a healthy, happy and safe holiday season. Fiat omnibus pax!

A TEST OF TRIVIA
Last month's trivia question generated quite a few quick responses, though only a handful submitted the correct answer of Thomas Bilodeau '34 and Thomas Bilodeau '60 as the only father-son team to be inducted into the BLS Hall of Fame. November's lucky T-shirt winner was Larry DiCara '67, who broke all existing speed records as well by answering within an hour of the eNewsletter's release! Close on his heels was Jonathan Spack '63, who received a BLS baseball hat for his fine efforts. Congratulations to both Larry and Jonathan!

The competition continues as we up the challenge ante with this month's holiday-based query, courtesy of Assistant Head Master Malcolm Flynn:

December's question:
Who was the class of 1851 alumnus who penned one of the world's most popular Christmas carols? (Bonus BLS baseball hat if you get the name of the Christmas carol as well.)

Those in the know should send responses (with name and class year) magna cum celeritate via e-mail to blsa@blsa.org.

BLS PRESENTS "PETER PAN"
The drama program at Boston Latin will present the J.M. Barrie classic "Peter Pan" on January 14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m. The cast, directed by Theater Arts teacher Christa Crewdson, involves 65 students in classes IV, V and VI and will include live music created by the Boston Latin chamber orchestra, The Wolfgang Orchestra. "It is wonderful to see all the different ages work together to create the magic of this story," said Crewdson. "I wanted to do this production to generate interest in the drama program, and to give students the experience of working on a large scale production." Theater-loving alumni are encouraged to attend, and an event is being planned for this occasion. For more information, watch the calendar on www.blsa.org or e-mail Director of Alumni Relations blsa@blsa.org. Tickets will also be available at the door for $7 for adults, and $5 for students and seniors.

SCHOOL MOURNS FACULTY MEMBER
Head Master Cornelia A. Kelley H'44 was saddened to announce the death of faculty member Kathleen Devin to the BLS community last week. Ms. Devin, a member of the Classics department for the last 10 years, was killed in an automobile accident in Rhode Island on December 11. She will be greatly missed by colleagues and students alike, and our sympathy and prayers are extended to her family.

MORE NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL
With more than 24 Advanced Placement offerings at BLS - including Music Theory, Economics and Statistics, to name but a few - Head Master Cornelia A. Kelley H'44 was pleased to report the following results from last spring's AP examinations: a total of 116 students were named AP Scholars; 51 received AP Scholars w/ Honor; 62 received AP Scholars w/ Distinction; and six were named as AP National Scholars. Congratulations to all.
Saturday Success School is still recruiting new tutors for the new year, with the first session starting on Saturday, January 18. Please contact McCarthy Institute for Transition and Support Associate Director Michelle Gallant '96 for more information at 617.635.8895, ext. 148.
Visual and Performing Arts Director Paul Pitts '73 seeks any and all instruments that alumni may want to donate to his minions of young musical talents at the school. Interested parties should e-mail Mr. Pitts at pjpitts@aol.com.
Congratulations to Boston Latin's cheerleaders, who were again named city champs for their performances during the 2004 fall season.

KUDOS FROM CASE
The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) will award BLSA with a Bronze Medal in January for its 2003 DVD entitled "A Celebration of Giving." The video, which premiered at the October 2003 campaign closing gala held at Boston Latin School, included interviews with alumni, current students and faculty members. Congratulations are due to the film's outstanding (and mostly alumni) production team of Susan Bear '80, Lorraine Driscoll '94, Ken Eng '94, Andrew Guidone and Alex Shear '94.

BOSTON EMPLOYEES TAKE NOTE
As of this month, BLSA is an official listing on the City of Boston's Employees' Campaign (COBEC), which enables all city workers to include charitable deductions from their paychecks to benefit chosen organizations. "This is an exciting opportunity for us to provide a new way for our alumni to participate in the school's Annual Fund while also contributing to the city's philanthropic efforts," said BLSA Director of Individual Giving Kate DeForest. "A special thanks is owed to Mike Lynch '76, a current parent at the school and director of the city's Office of Cable Communications, who helped initiate this process for us."

THE CHALLENGE CONTINUES
To date, more than 330 alumni have taken the Bressler Challenge by making first-time or increased gifts to the Annual Fund that are then matched by Lorraine and Alan Bressler ’55. To find out more about taking the Challenge, please click here.

ALUMNI IN THE NEWS
Dr. Drue King '39 was prominently featured along with another Harvard classmate in the December 12 Boston Globe Magazine article, "Southern Discomfort: With quiet grace, two black men change the heart of Harvard in 1941." Click here to view the article in its entirety.
In January, Julius Babbitt '87 will begin his new post as Director of Alumni Programs at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. Babbitt, who received his master's in public administration (MPA) from the Kennedy School in 2001, has spent more than 13 years in public service, having worked in the administrations of four Republican governors of Massachusetts and as an assistant secretary and adviser to five cabinet secretaries, most recently Secretary Ellen Roy Herzfelder. A former trustee of BLSA, Babbitt will now join his classmate, Harvard Alumni Affairs Deputy Executive Director Charlie Cardillo '87, on the Cambridge campus.
Sinead Keegan '01 was featured in a CNN.com article titled "Some students mull full degree overseas" on December 1. The article delved into the reasons of why American students choose to study abroad, and quoted Keegan, a senior at McGill University in Montreal, as saying "For me, the final decision was I liked two schools equally, and one of them was a quarter of the price and that was McGill."
