The BLS Class Captain Program

2003-2004 Job Description: Class Captain

Class Captains are the primary liaison between their classmates, the Association and BLS. They have proven to be highly effective in this role and serve to enhance a sense of community. We rely on Class Captains to increase the participation levels of their respective classes not only in financial support, but also event participation. The overall participation rate is nearly 14% higher in classes with a Class Captain. This substantial difference demonstrates that the importance of Class Captains cannot be overstated.

Functions: friend raising and fund raising

Specific expectations include, but are not limited to:

  • Drafting a fund raising letter to your classmates promoting the importance of unrestricted annual giving and participation (Summer 2003)

  • Attending a Volunteer Training session (Fall 2003)

  • Contacting classmates and encouraging participation in local and regional events (As needed)

  • Attend a minimum one (1) fund raising phonathon and solicit classmates for unrestricted gifts to support current needs at BLS (location and date TBD)

  • Provide updates to the BLSA on current classmates profiles, including addresses, occupations, etc. as you encounter them (As needed)

  • Assist BLSA in locating "lost" classmates and providing updated information (All year)

Volunteer commitment: Make an unrestricted gift to the Annual Fund.

Additional volunteer duties:

  • Enlist classmates to join you at phonathons (location & date TBD)

  • Authoring a letter to your classmates at some point in the spring providing update of class giving, relaying any information about fellow classmates, update them on activities at BLS, etc. (Spring 2004)

  • Providing feedback to BLSA on classmates' interests, concerns, and giving potentials (As needed)

  • Thanking donors for their gifts - writing notes, making phone calls, sending e-mails, etc. (TBD)

Personal peer-to-peer contact has been proven over and over to be the most effective alumni relations and fund raising tool. As a Class Captain, you will be helping to:

  • Increase participation at BLSA events
  • Raise much needed Annual Fund support for BLS
  • Providing your classmates with an invaluable connection to BLS and each other

Our many thanks to these alumni who continue to show their commitment and dedication to BLS. If you are interested in joining the Class Captains team, call 617.450.0004 ext. 20.
