Since 1985, a group of committed alumni have supported the BLS Varsity Club with the purpose to maintain, improve and promote athletics for all of Latin School’s students. For more information on how to help the Varsity Club, please contact Bruce McKinnon '74 or Alumni Relations Director Lynn Flaherty at blsa@blsa.org, or call (617) 450-0004 x127.

Message from the Coach
Dear Varsity Club Friends:

The just completed fall season saw 292 student-athletes representing Boston Latin School successfully in six different sports — football, soccer, swimming, volleyball, cross country and golf — on a total of 12 teams. Nine were named Dual County League All Stars, and the girls' volleyball team qualified for the State Tournament for the seventh consecutive year.

The winter season has just begun, and Latin School offers five sports for boys and girls — basketball, hockey, indoor track, swimming and wrestling — fielding a total of 13 teams. Girls' hockey and boys' basketball look particularly strong this year, and wrestling, which includes four girls on the team, has also made great strides in the last few years.

The winter schedule is accessible by clicking on the link below. Come and root for the Wolfpack if you can, and thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,
Coach John McDonough

Thank you!
To date, the fall Varsity Club membership drive has raised nearly $47,000 from more than 135 alumni donors, including John I. Fitzgerald ’65, whose funds will purchase warm-up suits for both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams, and Pat Daley ’74, who has contributed toward needed swimming gear. This is a robust start as we continue to generate support for the winter and spring seasons, and our gratitude is given to all of the following Varsity Club members (click here to view the donor list).

Varsity Club Q&A: Marvin Cine '04
Wolfpack football co-captain Marvin Cine’s senior year at Boston Latin proved to be a memorable one, kicking off in September 2003 with a reporter and a photographer in tow — sun up to sun down — to capture him as the subject of the 2003 Fall Bulletin’s cover story, “A Day in the Life of Senior Marvin Cine.” The athlete and scholar, who gained acceptance to the eight colleges to which he applied his senior year, took a few minutes to answer a handful of questions just prior to the start of his second semester at Harvard.

Q: How important a role did athletics play in your time at Boston Latin?
A: Athletics played a vital role in my development and, without sports, I probably would not have learned many life lessons. Dedication and hard work were the name of the game and, without these indispensable traits, I would not have been able to achieve my goals in the classroom or on the field. Athletics illustrated to me that I had to work/lift to my optimal potential, while also trying to help my teammates work to their optimal potential. Subsequently, I learned to accept nothing but the best from myself, because if you are not going to put your best foot forward, what is the point of even playing the sport? Athletics presented me with the stage to become a leader and to become a young man who understands that hard work and dedication are prerequisites for success.

Q: Are you pursuing any sports at Harvard?
A: I had trained assiduously this summer, but when I arrived at school my heart was not in it. I genuinely love football, but I know that my time will be better served if I study hard and broaden my horizons (in different activities). I would love to be playing football at Harvard, but if my heart isn't in it 110 percent, I don't think it would be fair to myself or the Harvard program to play. I won't be away from sports forever, because I would like to coach a high school team someday (preferably Latin School), but for now, my playing days are over.

Q: Why do you think it is important for alumni to support athletics today at BLS?
A: Whenever I have a spare moment in the day, I find myself recounting memories about the bus rides to games, my fellow teammates, the Friday night lights, the big games and the whole experience that went with playing sports. I will cherish these memories for as long as I live, and one day I, too, will support Latin athletics so that a young man or woman can make his/her own memories as well. We, as alumni, have a responsibility to aid our fellow Latin athletes of the present and future in hopes that they too may one day offer the same aid for those who follow them. The royal purple and white of Latin School is adored by all who have worn the colors, and, with alumni donations, Latin’s athletes will have the proper resources to continue to be competitive and reach for the stars.

Spotlight: Coach Bob McNamara
Boys' Basketball Coach Bob McNamara began his tenure at BLS in 1994, having previously coached at Milton High School and Cathedral High School, where he won a State Championship in 1980. He is looking forward to a challenging year in the highly competitive Dual County League (DCL) with his group of "veteran" b-ball players. Last year's team — with its up-tempo offense and a tenacious, trapping defense — had an outstanding record of 15-7 and qualified for the State Tournament.

New Coach Appointments
Coach McDonough announced the following new appointments for the year:

Fall
Boys' Soccer: Justin Swain, Head Coach; Anthony Cillo, Assistant Coach
Girls' Soccer: Lois Kessen, Assistant Coach
Winter
Boys' Hockey: Frank Woods '94, Head Coach; Darryl Dwan '89, Assistant Coach; Patrick O'Leary, Assistant Coach
J.V. Boys' Hockey: Jack Koen '89
Track: Darcia Taylor, Assistant Coach

Sports in the City
A mention of the importance of sports for youths in Mayor Thomas Menino’s State of the City address last week shed light on the lack of funding devoted to this area in Boston’s budget. Click here to read The Boston Globe’s view of the most recent budget woes for school athletics.
